Waste - Your Duty of Care
PowerPoint and Trainer’s Toolkit
This Duty of Care PowerPoint was prepared as The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 were introduced into law. This disc has been published to allow trainers time to prepare their materials in readiness for the new requirements. This PowerPoint covers the main changes to the legislation. There are of course differences across the UK regions and you can modify this presentation to make it suitable for individual audiences and to reflect local requirements and the evolving regulations.
In addition there have been several changes to the Duty of Care over the years such as the introduction of the requirement for the use of EWC / LoW codes and also related supplementary legislation covering hazardous waste and landfill pre-treatment, so it seems timely to re-visit and refresh Duty of Care training in the light of these developments.
This product is intended to provide the advantage of low cost while at the same time allowing you the flexibility to easily make changes to the content. Depending on your requirements, you can use it straight from the box or modify the structure and content according to your needs. We encourage you to introduce your own slides and shots of sites, skips and waste streams that will be familiar to your audience. The more you can make the presentation relevant to your audience using your own examples and experiences the more effective it will be.
The presentation looks at the Duty of Care from the perspective of the waste producer and includes the changes relevant to waste producers that have been introduced over the years but not yet included in a new Code of Practice, such as the requirement to include LoW / EWC codes on Waste Transfer Notes.
The presentation covers:
Illegal waste disposal and the need for the Duty of Care
Controlled Waste and duties of ‘holders’
Legal responsibilities of the main actors in the waste chain including Brokers and Dealers
Definition of authorised persons

In a nutshell
This resource has been produced to support Duty of Care training presentations.
It contains a PowerPoint Presentation, a script to accompany the presentation, Trainers Tips and a Tool Box of accessories to enhance your training course. The structure and trainer support notes have been developed from several years experience during training delivery to audiences in industry using similar training materials.
The package is designed to be flexible and can be tailored to fit your individual business and training needs.
It can also be integrated with our other waste training products, including: the
Hazardous Waste Suite, A Suitable Case For Treatment (our waste characterisation
training DVD) and our waste segregation DVD - Do What it Says on the Bin.
You may be an experienced trainer or this may be your first time in front of an audience. If you have not facilitated a training session before or are new to the subject, we have included some Tips for New Trainers to help you get the best from the package.
You will probably have your own preferences and experiences that influence how you will deliver this presentation and your audiences may vary from the boardroom to the production line - with a whole day's training available for one group and only ten minutes for a tool box talk for another. So we have made this package as flexible as possible. This is not an excuse for merely designing something without structure, on the contrary we have made this package so you can just pick it up and run with it - but it's more likely you will want to tailor it to suit your own needs.
Although this package can be used by trainers who are new to environmental issues, it is advisable, as it is when presenting any subject, to do your homework first and prepare for and anticipate the questions you may have to answer during the session. However, it is assumed you have some knowledge of the Duty of Care and waste issues relevant to your activities and this package is not intended as a complete 'train the trainer' guide. As well as customising the PowerPoint, you can copy and edit the script to suit your personalised presentation.
